ABOUT US

A team of skilled craftsmen, architects and engineers, Fine Concrete’s approach is to translate design into built form. In the studio, we have trained architects and industrial designers guiding the process through design and shop drawings, handing off to project managers and fabricators with over 35 years of experience in precast formwork and casting. We are experts in 3-dimensional form and Ductal®, the specialty ultra high performance concrete design mix, and hold a sublicense to design and fabricate with this patented technology. We have the resources of Lafarge technical behind us and a relationship with Silman Associates as our Ductal® certified engineering team.

ALEXANDER KITCHIN

Alexander Kitchin was educated at the University of Virginia and Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). He is a Fellow in Architecture at the American Academy in Rome in 2001/2002 and a recipient of a Graham Foundation grant for the investigation into design and research in concrete.

Alexander teaches a design studio at the University of Virginia exploring the ways architects approach design and product development and investigating the character inherent in materials and how the process of making informs the spaces we design. He has taught studios at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan.

As a leading designer in concrete furnishings, Alexander brings to the firm over 25 years of experience in architecture and advanced digital and analog formwork and concrete casting techniques. He is a leader in the industry in concrete design mixes and fabrications. His expertise lies in translating design intent into realities of form and space.

nicole sherman

Nicole Sherman graduated from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University with a degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies. She studied Russian Language at Columbia University Language Institute.

Nicole’s design background is in jewelry design. Her design work has been marketed and exhibited in art galleries and boutiques in the US and she has published two books on design and fabrication. Her business background includes the operation and finances of the architecture firm, Sherman and Associates, as well as Marketing and Sales Management in Luxury Hotels and Restaurants.

In 2008, Nicole joined Alexander and established a new partnership, Fine Concrete, bringing her marketing, operational expertise and design background to the firm with a new focus on Ultra High Performance Concrete. She is the managing partner and is an expert in product design and development, UHPC manufacturing systems and implementation.

In 2012, Alexander and Nicole established the first material research studio with Ductal®, Ultra High Performance Concrete, a collaboration with LaFarge North America, the University of Virginia and their firm, Fine Concrete. The firm continues to research and explore the ways in which Ultra High Performance Concrete intersects the design world with new and innovative castings.
